Steve Sweeney mulls NJ governor's race, recruits others

Posted: Updated:

Though Senate President Steve Sweeney said there's "nothing wrong" with the only Democrat running for governor so far, he is continuing to recruit another candidate.

Sen. Barbara Buono of Metuchen has announced her candidacy. But Sweeney said he has not ruled out running himself, as he gauges others' interest.

"I'm one of the people that we're looking at," the Gloucester County Democrat told reporters who had gathered Monday to hear Democrats' take on Gov. Chris Christie's State of the State speech, scheduled for Tuesday.

Sweeney and rival Sen. Dick Codey met recently to discuss Codey's interest in running. Codey was acting governor for 14 months after Gov. Jim McGreevey resigned, but didn't run for a full term.

Democrats were left wanting when Newark Mayor Cory Booker abandoned the idea of running.
