NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Five people were hurt in an accident involving an escalator at a New Jersey PATH station.

The incident happened about 9 a.m. at the Exchange Place PATH Station in Jersey City.

Port Authority spokesman Ron Marsico said the five people suffered non-life threatening injuries, including back and neck pain, scrapes, bumps and bruises, the AP reported.

Three people were taken to the hospital.

Video of the incident posted on YouTube showed people trying to continue up the escalator as it moved the wrong direction. People at the bottom were heard yelling "Stop" as people descended back to the lower level.

One person who says they were on the escalator at the time said it started moving backwards with hundreds of people on it.  @Latond66 says he jumped from the escalator.

The YouTube video also showed several people who had climbed out of the escalator onto a sloped area next to the malfunctioning equipment.

Two of the station's three escalators were shut down after the incident.

The station had suffered extensive flooding during Superstorm Sandy, though it wasn't known if that could have had any impact on Monday's problem.
