Pine City boy in critical condition after crash near Forest Lake church

FOREST LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Pine City, Minn. teenager is in critical condition after a three-car crash that shut down Highway 61 near a Forest Lake, Minn. church Thursday.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 15-year-old Bryce Koenig and his mother, Patricia Mabey, were stopped on Highway 61, waiting to make a left turn into the Maranatha Church parking lot around 3:30 p.m. when they were struck from behind and pushed into oncoming traffic.

The driver of van was in the process of lowering their sun visor when they rear-ended Mabey's car, pushing her into the path of an oncoming vehicle. She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, but was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and is expected to survive.

Koenig was buckled up, but remains in critical condition at Children's in St. Paul.
