Minneapolis water main break: Hennepin Bridge reopens

Posted: Updated:

Crews continue to clean-up the northeast side of downtown Minneapolis after a large water main break Thursday afternoon flooded Hennepin Avenue from the Hennepin bridge to Washington Avenue.

The Hennepin Avenue bridge reopened at 9 a.m. Friday, and as of 9:30 a.m. all streets downtown were open except:

  • Hennepin Avenue from 1st Street North to Washington Avenue
  • 2nd Street North from Hennepin Avenue to 1st Avenue North
  • 1st Street South from Hennepin Avenue to Marquette Avenue
  • West River Parkway from 4th Avenue North to Portland Avenue South

Crews were focusing on opening Hennepin Avenue as soon as possible.

Several bus routes in downtown Minneapolis were on detour: Routes 4, 6, 7, 11, 61, 141, 667, 668, 671, 672 and 674 (as of 4:30 a.m. Friday)

The break happened around 2:30 p.m. at Hennepin Avenue and 2nd Street. Private contractors were working on a development project when they hit and ruptured a 36-inch water main.

14 million gallons of water spilled from the broken water main, flooding streets and the downtown post office parking ramp.

Much of the water froze, creating ice on streets and sidewalks. Hennepin Avenue was clear of standing water Friday morning, but crews were still salting icy roads and sidewalks in the area.

About a half-dozen buildings near the break still don't have water, but crews worked through the night to clean up the mess.
