Minneapolis Public Works crews have responded to a water main break near the intersection Hennepin Avenue and 2nd Street in downtown Minneapolis.
Minneapolis officials say the water pressure has returned to normal for most of the residents and businesses affected by a water main break on Thursday afternoon.
Officials say customers whose water service has resumed may drink the water; although, if cloudy or discolored water pours from taps, residents are urged to let the water run until it clears.
About a half a dozen buildings in the immediate vicinity of the ruptured 36-inch main still do not have water; however, city crews plan to work through the evening and overnight.
Structures currently without water are located along the following roads:
2nd Street North
3rd Avenue North
Hennepin Avenue
Once the main is repaired, the city plans to test the water extensively to ensure it is safe.
Several streets remain closed as sanding and grader crews work to prepare icy streets to reopen. Hennepin Avenue is expected to remain closed between Washington Avenue and Main Street -- including the bridge -- through morning rush hour.
The following streets were closed as of 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, but crews hope to have them open as soon as possible:
Hennepin Avenue from Washington Avenue to Wilder Street
2nd Street North from Hennepin Avenue to 1st Avenue North
1st Street North from Hennepin Avenue to 1st Avenue North
1st Street South from Hennepin Avenue to Marquette Avenue
West River Parkway from 4th Avenue North to Portland Avenue South
1st Avenue North is closed at Main Street
The bridge between Northeast and Nicollet Island will be open to traffic.
