NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A police officer shot a man who was threatening a woman with scissors in Brooklyn on Wednesday, the NYPD said.

The woman had flagged down the uniformed officer, who was on the way to court, and asked the cop to come to an apartment on Fort Greene Place to deal with an emotional disturbed person, the NYPD said.

When they got there, they found the 40-year-old man, described by the New York Post as the woman's boyfriend, holding scissors to his throat.

The man then threw the female to the ground and threatened to stab her, police said. That is when the officer fired twice, striking the man in the chest, the NYPD said.

Medics responded and took the wounded man to Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

The officer was treated for tinnitus at Methodist Hospital, police said.

The woman was not hurt.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.

Renting out someone's apartment is an easy way to get an inexpensive place to stay if you're a tourist, and cheaper and more convenient than most hotels. But now the government is stepping in and trying to get a handle on a booming business that may not be playing by the rules. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is squaring off in court with multi-million dollar Internet company Airbnb.
