Michigan professor uses YouTube to debunk 'winter hat' myth

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -- A University of Michigan professor has put on his thinking cap to debunk a popular winter myth.
"I've done the research and I know that I don't need to wear a hat," says professor Andrew Maynard.
Maynard, who works at Michigan's Risk Science Center, says the body does not lose a disproportionate amount of heat from the head. He created a YouTube video to highlight his point; hats aren't as necessary as you think.
"You look at the scientific literature and you realize that it's just not true," says Maynard. "You lose as much heat through your head as you do through any other exposed part of your body."
Maynard says the 'hat myth' started in the military when a manual gave credence to the cap.
"The other part of this myth is this idea that if you're bald you've really got to wear a hat as well because your hair actually keeps some of the heat in. Actually, it doesn't do that much. You'd need a heck of a lot of hair to keep all that heat in," says Maynard.
