Man accused of using sledge hammer to attack roommate
MESA, Ariz. -
A Mesa man is behind bars after being accused of trying to attack his roommate with a sledge hammer.
On Sunday at 10:20 p.m., officers were called to a home near 56th Street and Broadway about a possible aggravated assault where the victim was locked in a bedroom.
According to the police report, while officers were en-route to the scene, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jeffrey West, began smashing the bedroom door with the hammer, and could be heard on the 9-1-1 call -- yelling that he was going to kill the victim.
When officers arrived at the scene, they saw West in the home's living room and the victim was able to climb out of the bedroom window to safety.
The officers tried to contact West, but he refused to exit the home despite their commands. SWAT teams were called to remove him a short time later.
Jeffrey was later booked for aggravated assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.
