PHOENIX -
The Maricopa County volunteer posse mall patrol made 31 criminal arrests this Christmas season. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is calling it "another successful holiday operation."
The posse accounted for about 3,200 man hours at nine valley malls, all at no cost to taxpayers. Posse members patrolled the malls in vehicles, on horseback, and on foot. Nearly 13,000 people were contacted and 31 criminal arrests were made.
The majority of arrests, according to MCSO, were for shoplifting.
$4,300 in stolen property was recovered from shoplifters and thieves, and posse members assisted in 203 incidents with other police agencies. Last year, Arpaio said his posse recovered $8,300 worth of stolen property.
10 active warrants were also cleared during the month-long operation.
What's next for the armed volunteer posse? Sheriff Arpaio plans to deploy them at valley schools.
The mall patrol was launched in 1993 to counter rising crime rates at local shopping malls.
