Police have arrested a man who allegedly fired shots at utility workers early Wednesday in Hall County.
Authorities say the workers were responding to a report of a downed power line off of Holland Road around midnight. The workers said that 62-year-old Donald Josh Deal came outside and began cursing at them and threatened them with a handgun, according to Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks of the Hall County Sheriff's Office. Wilbanks said that Deal fired a couple of shots in the workers' direction.
The utility workers backed away and called authorities, leaving residents without power.
When deputies arrived, Deal retreated into his house, which led to a two-hour SWAT standoff.
Authorities said they were concerned that the incident could mirror an incident in Webster, N.Y. in which firefighters were ambushed and shot to death.
"Copycat crimes are something that concerns us greatly. When we have an incident such as what took place in Webster, N.Y., you have men and women out there that re doing a good thing, trying to do good work and help people and then you have people who want to prey upon those. So of course that was our biggest concern. Thankfully it turned out what was not the case here," said Wilbanks.
Deal was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault after he peacefully surrendered to SWAT. Wilbanks said Deal appeared to be intoxicated.
