An elementary school in Atlanta is making sure that Atlanta visits its less fortunate students. Dobbs Elementary School gave away hundreds of toys on Monday.
Volunteers helped parents like Lasonya Thomas make sure their children have a merry Christmas.
"It means a lot to me because I really don't have much to give my boys, so this right here will help their Christmas be even brighter. And I really appreciate it," Thomas said.
The first annual toy giveaway was sponsored by Toys for Tots and South Metro Scholastic Fund, a nonprofit that gives school supplies to underprivileged children.
Principal Pete Settelmayer says their education extends well beyond the classroom.
"They come to us, maybe not sleeping in a bed at night, maybe not eating around a family table, maybe moving from one location to the next," said Settelmayer.
The media center at Dobbs Elementary has been transformed into Santa's workshop. They're giving away some 2,000 toys on Christmas Eve. Parents are encouraged to pick up two toys for every child in their family.
"I have a 'My First Mini Cycle'. It's for my little boy," said Kewanna Everett.
Everett says it doesn't feel like she's accepting charity because she was able to pick a present for her son just like she would in a shopping mall.
"And it's a blessing for people who may be less fortunate to be able to get stuff on their own," said Everett.
Dobbs Elementary is a Title I school. Some 98 percent of its students receive free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. For many, the only meals they get are at school.
