New IIHS crash tests find some luxury models under-perform

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new round of crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found moderately-priced vehicles out-performing some luxury models in a key safety test.

When tested in August, only three of eleven luxury and near-luxury models earned a Good or Acceptable rating.

Among the family cars, 13 of 18 earned the IIHS distinction of Top Safety Pick.

They include:

  • The Chrysler 200 four-door,
  • Dodge Avenger,
  • Ford Fusion,
  • The Honda Accord two-door and four-door,
  • The KIA Optima,
  • Nissan Altima,
  • Subaru's Legacy and Outback,
  • The Suzuki Kizashi,
  • and the Volkswagen Passat.

IIHS said many automakers have responded to the new test, to make future models safer.
