Mental illness, gun control in light of Newtown, Conn school shooting: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
On Monday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss the Connecticut elementary school massacre.
The history of mass killers has long been tied to individuals who have some sort of mental illness - yet funding continues to decline to treat these disorders.
Susanna thinks the term "mental illness" is too vast, as 1 in 4 Americans have some sort of depression (which is defined as a mental illness). Until this term is more tightly defined we will probably not get the attention to funding that's needed.
Rochelle stated that the tie to mental illness and mass murderers has long proven to encompass people with disorders which could be detected and treated if funding were available, such as psychopathy or depression. It's nearly impossible to get health insurance once a person has been treated for a mental illness. This must change.
Another component of this situation is gun control. Rochelle believes tighter legislation needs to be in place regarding guns.
Susanna agrees, although states the debate should center more around the ban on assault weapons vs. handguns, as those as the vehicles being used in these mass murders.
The thoughts and prayers of the Chat Room team go out o the families effected by this tragedy.
