A Crystal police officer was carjacked at a New Hope gas station on his way work Friday morning. The incident led to a struggle that ended with the officer shooting the suspect and the suspect driving away in the officer's car.
The carjacking happened at the Holiday gas station at 42nd Ave. N. and Nevada Ave. N. The officer was in plain clothes and driving his own, unmarked car at the time.
The Hennepin County sheriff's office is investigating the case as an officer-involved shooting. Indications are the officer shot the suspect during a struggle, but the suspect still managed to steal the car and drive off.
The suspect was found at 7:15 a.m. Friday morning near 28th Street and Humboldt Ave. S. in south Minneapolis. He was in a stolen car, with a non life-threatening gunshot wound. The suspect was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment and is in custody.
Police said another vehicle found just east of Uptown, in a parking lot at Lake Street and Bryant Avenue, was also believed to be connected to the New Hope incident.
The Hennepin County sheriff's office is also investigating the suspect for possible involvement in two incidents that took place prior to the gas station incident. Early Friday morning, a man was attacked at 49th and Flag in New Hope. There was another reported assault of a SuperAmerica store worker at 36th and Winnetka in Crystal.
