CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Get in touch with your artsy side this weekend. Time Out Chicago's Marissa Conrad has events that will have the artist in you satisfied with a twist of the holiday season.
From a tour around the Fine Arts Building to holiday performances to holiday shopping, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this season artistically and in style. Plus, who doesn't love chocolate? Don't miss out on a delicious chocolate-making workshop or the chance to dine on sugar plum fairies and celebrate the world favorite holiday play, the Nutcracker.
How anyone could possibly walk away from this place without feeling inspired, we haven't the faintest idea. The 127-year-old property was home to Frank Lloyd Wright, poet Ezra Pound and Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Tonight, watch current artists as they perform in dance, music and theater productions. At the fourth annual open house, visitors are given free rein to wander the ten-floor studio space. Night at the Fine Arts Building Fine Arts Building, 410 S Michigan Ave (312-566-9800, fineartsbuilding.tv). 5–10pm. Free.
Craft a cocoa abode at the Chicago Park District's feel-good holiday class. Chocolate House Making Workshop Shabbona Park, 6935 W Addison St (773-685-6205, chicagoparkdistrict.com). 10am–noon, 12:30–2:30pm. • Eugene Field Park, 5100 N Ridgeway Ave (773-478-9744, chicagoparkdistrict.com). 10am–noon, 12:30–2:30pm; $20.
Ashamed that you salivated at the sight of sugar plum fairies at last year's Nutcracker performance? Don't be—theater makes us hungry, too. Fortunately, this special Joffrey performance includes dinner beforehand at the Palmer House Hilton, plus a series of Creation Stations where kids can decorate gingerbread cookies and cupcakes, get holiday manicures from kid-friendly Rock Candy Nail Salon, make beaded jewelry with Caravan Beads and take in a magic performance by the Great Frankini. Other treats are in store, as well, including a production of that well-known ballet of mice and men (and nutcrackers). The Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker Family Dinner Palmer House Hilton, 17 E Monroe St (312-386-8921, joffrey.org). 4–7pm; $100–$400.
Organized by a group of independent women artists each winter, the market unfurls a variety of merchandise, including gender-neutral enamelware, eco-friendly wood accessories and photography created by more than 35 lady artisans. Among this year's vendors are Laurie Freivogel (kiku handmade glass), Melissa Kolbusz (WIRED reclaimed jewelry) and Anne Leuck Feldhaus (custom pet portraits). Chicago Art Girls Holiday Pop Up Shop Helium Gallery, 4710 N Ravenswood Ave (chicagoartgirls.com). 11am–5pm.
