Burglary suspect caught running from Lincoln Park home

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Following a foot chase from a home where a burglar alarm was sounding in Lincoln Park, police arrested a suspected Tuesday morning and later learned he was a convicted felon.

Near North District officers responded to a burglar alarm in the 2300 block of North Wayne shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to police News Affairs.

Officers were patrolling the immediate area when they received a call of a man knocking on doors and telling residents who answered that he was trying to locate a particular person.

Officers approached the rear of the residence where the alarm was sounding and saw a man running out the rear porch. An officer ordered the man to stop, but he tried to escape by jumping a fence.

The officer pursued while sending a description of the suspect over police radio. Officers apprehended 32-year-old Matthew Lewis a short distance away, police said.

A pry bar was still wedged in the rear of the residence where Lewis entered, police said. Officers also recovered a hat and cell phone belonging to Lewis a short distance away.

Lewis, of the 6600 block of South Drexel, was charged with residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. The convicted felon was expected in bond court Wednesday.

"The brazen manner in which this offender attempted to knock on doors and identify homes where residents were not home reminds us to remain vigilant and report any suspicious person or behavior," Near North District Cmdr. William Dunn said.
