SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -
An 18-year-old Schaumburg high school student was killed early Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in the northwest suburb.
Sobbing could be heard from a Schaumburg home where family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of 18 year old Mikias Tibebu.
"It's a very tough time, that's all I can tell you," said Befekadu Retta, a family friend.
Police say Tibebu's body was discovered near Schaumburg Road and Branchwood Drive early Saturday morning. Since then detectives have been working tirelessly to determine what happened.
"When our first officer arrived he found a couple of bystanders that were performing CPR on a very seriously injured 18 year old high school student from Schaumburg High School," said Sgt. John Nebl with the Schaumburg Police Department.
Police say the investigation progressed during the day but there are still several unanswered questions.
"It looked like the possibility of a hit and run but we weren't positive because there wasn't a lot of physical evidence that allowed us to determine any type of vehicle," said Sgt. Nebl.
At Schaumburg High School a moment of silence was held in honor of Tibebu moments before the start of the varsity basketball game Saturday night.
Tibebu was a senior and cross country track runner Schaumburg High. He's described as a dedicated athlete and student with academic honors.
A friend had a message for whoever is responsible for his death.
"I just want to say just turn yourself in, kind of like, that's just bad, how you can just hit and run like that... that's horrible," said Robert Gonzalez.
