COLD SPRING, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police say he's their only suspect in the fatal shooting of Officer tom Decker, but 34-year-old Ryan Larson remains free after being released without charges -- and he spoke with FOX 9 by phone.

It was a short conversation, but several interesting details emerged.

The first thing Larson said was that he wanted the attention to be on Decker on Wednesday because he thought the day of his funeral is one that should be reserved for remembering and honoring his sacrifice.

Larson said he is unequivocally innocent in the case, adding that he knew Decker and had met him a few times -- though that isn't surprising in a town the size of Cold Spring.

He went on to say he was asleep when Decker was killed. Some have expressed skepticism that the gunshot sound wouldn't have woken him, but the people inside the bar below Larson's apartment didn't hear anything either.

Larson told FOX 9 News there will likely be a point where he wants to say more, just not right now. In a text message, he said he wants the truth to come out for the safety of the community.
