Chicago police chased down and arrested six people who robbed a pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, then loosed a pit bull on responding officers Tuesday night in the South Shore neighborhood.
The trouble started after a Pizza Hut driver went to the 7600 block of South Coles Avenue about 9 p.m. to make a delivery, a police source said.
One person pretended to pay for the pizza, while three to four other male suspects came out of a gangway and robbed him at gunpoint, police said.
Officers converged on the area within minutes and spotted people matching the robbers' descriptions -- pizza boxes still in hand -- in an alleyway in the same block, police said.
The suspects took off running toward a nearby house, but police were able to arrest a total of six males, ranging in age from juveniles to adults, police said. At least one of the suspects made it to the house and loosed a large male pit bull, sicking it at the officers chasing him.
Police were forced to shoot the dog twice, but it survived, authorities said. The animal was turned over to Chicago Animal Care & Control, which is seeking medical attention for the dog.
Officers also recovered proceeds from the robbery, but police could not immediately say how much was taken.
No officers were injured, and the delivery driver was "scared to death but not hurt," police said.
Charges are pending late Tuesday. Area Central detectives are investigating.
