Noon deadline for charges in Cold Spring Officer Tom Decker death

Posted: Updated:

The Stearns County attorney has until noon Tuesday to file charges against the man arrested in the shooting death of Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker.

BCA agents and other investigators are using the 24-hour charging extension to look for the shotgun used to kill Officer Decker. They're also conducting interviews and bolstering their case against the suspect, Ryan Larson, who was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The charges will hopefully give a clearer picture of what happened last Thursday night behind Winner's Bar. Decker, 31, was ambushed and shot twice while responding to a report of a suicidal man.

Until then, many in Cold Spring are focusing on Decker's family -- especially his young children -- and making sure they're supported right now and for the rough days ahead.

Hundreds of people surrounded Decker's family, friends, and coworkers at a candlelight vigil Monday night at the Cold Spring funeral home It's the same place where thousands are expected to pay their respects at his wake, starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The woman who organized the vigil says the town of 4,000 is in pain right now and it's their job to honor the man who responded to potentially dangerous situations every day. Lisa Stukey said Decker came to her house about a year ago when she thought she had an intruder and described him as "very brave."

Several funds have been set up for those who are interested in helping Officer Decker's family.
