Man held without bail in robbery, riding in car that tried to run down cop

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Michael Holmes wasn't driving, but he still faces attempted murder charges for allegedly riding in a car that tried to run down a Chicago Police officer after a robbery in the Gold Coast.

Holmes, 20, was a back-seat passenger during the Nov. 18 confrontation, which prompted the officer to shoot at the oncoming car, then jump out of its path to avoid being hit, Cook County prosecutors said Sunday.

The officer wasn't hurt and the shot he fired didn't strike anyone in the car, authorities have said.

The attack on the officer occurred about 6 p.m. Nov. 18 after a robbery at American Apparel, 46 E. Walton St., in the heart of the Gold Coast.

As Holmes and three other men accused in the theft jumped into the car, the officer approached the vehicle in attempt to stop the men, prosecutors said.

But the car instead accelerated towards him, and the officer fired at the car, prosecutors said.

The men escaped, but Holmes was arrested last week near his home after a brief chase.

A 17-year-old allegedly involved in the robbery and attack on the officer also was arrested last week.

Holmes faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and felony theft.

Judge Edward Harmening ordered him held without bail.
