SeaWorld Orlando is mourning the death of one of its whales.
A video posted on YouTube shows a dolphin biting a girl during a feeding at SeaWorld Orlando last month.
The girl's father recorded the video, which was later posted to YouTube. It shows 8-year-old Jillian Thomas of Alpharetta, Georgia, standing beside the tank of the bottlenose dolphins during a feeding at SeaWorld Orlando.
The encounter got too close when one of the dolphins grabbed her hand. Jillian was seen holding a container up in the air, then a dolphin reaching out of the water and biting her hand.
The family said she was afraid the dolphin would bite her hand off. She suffered three puncture wounds.
Her mother, Amy Thomas, in a phone interview with Fox News, said she wonders whether such close encounters with animals are worth it when it comes to a child's safety.
In a statement released in response to the incident, SeaWorld said safety is a top priority and that there was staff monitoring the feeding.
The family said that an earlier feeding of the dolphins went without incident, but they do not plan to allow their children to participate in such close-contact feeding experiences in the future.
