Police say a Staten Island man beat his wife to death with a baseball bat and then tried to hang himself early Sunday morning.

Police received a 911 call from one of the couple's teenaged children around 2:23 a.m. and arrived to the house on Beechwood Place in the Castleton Corners section. They found 42-year-old Jodi Surinaga unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to the head. EMS arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Surinaga, the father of two, apparently tried to hang himself when EMS arrived and he was taken into custody.

The New York Post says Surinaga committed the assault after he found out his wife was cheating on him.

The Post said a neighbor told the paper the couple had been married 20 years and the family lived in the home for about 18 years.

The victim's parents live a few blocks away from the house and arrived after the incident. Jodi Surinaga's mother was so distraught she was taken away in an ambulance, according to the Post.

Police do not know how much the two teenage children witnessed and are still investigating the incident.
