The pro football community is mourning the life tonight of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher.
Authorities say Belcher shot his girlfriend Saturday morning before committing suicide in front of his head coach and general manager.
Belcher, a Long Island native, was only 25-years-old and had a 3-month-old baby.
In West Babylon especially here at his alma mater, Belcher was a hometown hero -- someone everyone looked up to.
The news that he killed his girlfriend and then himself has now rocked West Babylon.
A Facebook memorial page shows the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker and Long Islander looking happy. The pictures were just taken during Thanksgiving.
Jovan smiled proudly with his baby and girlfriend, the same woman Kansas City police say he shot to death Saturday morning before turning the gun on himself.
After shooting to death his 22-year-old live-in girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins and mother of his 3-month-old child, police say Belcher then drove to the Kansas City Chief's facility and committed suicide in front of his head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.
Police say before firing the fatal shot, Belcher thanked them for all they had done for him.
Belcher had been with the team for four seasons.
Fox 5 News went by the Belcher family home where people had gathered and even had his jerseys hanging above the garage. A family member told Fox 5 they were too devastated to speak.
The Chiefs host the Carolina Panthers tomorrow and the game will be going forward as planned.
