CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a man who was fleeing police in a stolen vehicle on the South Side Thursday night.

An off-duty officer and a passenger were in a vehicle stopped at a light at 10 p.m. in the 3700 block of South King Drive when the officer saw a vehicle strike a pedestrian and an utility pole, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

The officer, who was still in uniform, exited his vehicle and approached the suspect, who then accelerated his vehicle backwards towards the officer, police said. In fear for his life, the officer discharged his weapon.

The suspect then sped forward towards the officer, who again discharged his weapon, striking the suspect, police said.

The suspect, pedestrian and passenger were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The officer was not injured.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officer, who had just gotten off work and was still in uniform, was in his personal vehicle, stopped at a light at the intersection of West 37th Street and South King Drive, with his girlfriend riding as a passenger.

Before the light changed, Camden said the officer saw a grey vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed that was coming toward him on King Drive, with several police cars chasing it.

As the vehicle approached, driver tried to make a hard turn onto West 37th St., but lost control, striking a female pedestrian and several light poles before hitting a retaining wall Camden said.

After checking on the pedestrian the officer approached the grey vehicle -- which was stolen – the male driver slammed the vehicle in reverse and was headed toward the officers Cheverolet Yukon, which still contained the officer's girlfriend, Camden said.

According to Camden, the officer fired two shots at the vehicle, but did not strike the driver, who side-swiped the officer's SUV.

The male in the stolen vehicle then put the car in drive and accelerated toward the officer, Camden said.

The officer fired two more shots, striking the male in the hand, Camden said.

By this time squad cars chasing the man arrived at the scene and detained the male in the stolen car, Camden said.

The male was taken in good condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and was alter released to police custody, Camden said.

The female pedestrian who was struck by the car was taken to University of Chicago Hospitals, Camden said, though her condition is unknown.

The officer was not injured, though his girlfriend suffered a minor injury to her hand.

"These coppers are on duty 24 hours a day," Camden said. "They protect and serve the public whenever they have opportunity to do so."
