As the holidays approach, we're all reminded to think about those who are less fortunate.  That's exactly what's taking place in one Detroit neighborhood.  Two people once couldn't stand the sight of each other.  Now one is relying on the other for survival.

DETROIT (WJBK) -- When we first brought you Annie's story, she was living with no heat in her Detroit home.  Thanks to some very generous people, she now has a new furnace.

"Some people were gracious enough, friends of Channel 2, to step up and donate money to buy the furnace... and then to have it installed," said Harold.  "I can't believe the outpouring.  It says there's a lot of good people in Detroit."

Harold is right.  There are lots of good people.  We all just want to be reassured of that when times are bad, and that's the gift that Harold and Annie gave us when they gave us their story.

Human kindness is the best tonic for cold, lonely, old bones, and thanks to the men of the McGuire family, who refuse to let our old women freeze.

"Harold, if anybody needs recognition it should be you because if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be here," said Annie.  "I almost gave up."

"Miracles happen, miracles.  I didn't expect this.  I mean, my life was in danger, but I wasn't afraid."
