Jawaun Dontell Woods, 24, a Gary resident, was charged by the Lake County Prosecutor's Office with attempted murder, attempted murder while committing a robbery, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and carjacking.
On Monday around 5:40 p.m., Woods followed a 28-year-old man into the restroom of the East Chicago South Shore train station. He approached the victim from behind, pulled his head backwards, and slashed his throat with a knife, an NICTD transit police release says.
The victim, who has since been treated and released from the hospital, was able to escape after throwing his keys, cell phone, and wallet to the ground.
After the assault, Woods drove the victim's stolen car to a nearby Lansing, Illinois Wal-Mart store where he purchased three Lady Gaga CD's with the victim's stolen credit card, according to police.
Video obtained from the Wal-Mart, along with telephone calls from the public, helped to identify Woods as a suspect in the case. The victim was later able to identify Woods as his attacker from a police photo line-up.
The silver 2005 Honda Accord (Illinois license plate H713340) taken by Woods has not yet been recovered by police.
Woods is currently not in police custody. He remains at large and is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
Anyone that comes in contact with him Woods or has any information on his whereabouts, should immediately notify police.
