SUN CITY, Ariz. -

There are new developments surrounding an 85-year-old man accused of killing his wife. George Sanders pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Sanders is accused of shooting and killing his 81-year old wife. He admitted to the crime, but told investigators his wife had been sick and asked him to kill her.

Sanders told police and the 911 dispatcher that his wife essentially begged him to shoot her.

"911 emergency?"

"Yes, my name is Sanders. I just shot my wife."

Back on November 9, the 85-year-old calmly told the dispatcher exactly what happened inside their Sun City home.

"Did you shoot her on purpose?"

"Yes. Because they were going to take her to the hospital. She is 81 years old and has gangrene on her feet. On her right foot. And she has MS and she has wounds and she just didn't want to go and said shoot me, just shoot me," Sanders told the dispatcher.

Sanders said he shot his wife Virginia in the head. She survived only to die a few days later in the hospital.

"Our laws do not permit someone to become judge, jury, medical examiner and executioner," says County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

Montgomery says his office pursued a first degree murder charge because the evidence was clear. He knows the decision may not be popular.

"It is not my job when we are prosecuting cases to worry about whether someone likes what I did," Montgomery says.

"We should be very cautious about presuming certain categories of someone's physical condition of health, that would permit them to have someone end their life. That is a slippery slope I am not going to travel down."

When asked, the county attorney did not rule out some sort of a plea deal. Sanders is free on $20,000 bond.

He's next expected to appear court on Jan. 11.
