A warning to motorists, speed cameras are coming to Chicago's streets.
The city will start testing the devices around the city starting next week but there is some controversy.
City crews are expected to install speed cameras outside Near North Montessori School and three other locations. They start taking pictures of speeders between Dec. 3 - Jan. 3. But no violations will be issued. After the test period, the devices will be removed.
One of the companies competing for this business, according to published reports, is Xerox State and Local Solutions, which installed their systems in Baltimore.
After three years, the machines reportedly issued thousands of erroneous tickets and judges sided with motorists in more than half the contested tickets. In Baltimore, Xerox is being replaced.
The other company is American Traffic Solutions, which also has a record of faulty cameras in Canada.
And the company that operates red light cameras is under the microscope for having too cozy a relationship with city hall and some former city employees.
Mayor Emanuel says the speed cameras could raise $20 million from tickets issued to speeding motorists.
There will be warning signs near the cameras, to be located near 2223 W. Pershing Road, 6541 N. Western Ave., 6340 S. King Dr. and 1446 W. Division.
