LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Reporters struck out in trying to reach a Michigan Supreme Court justice who is accused of fraud in a real estate deal.

Justice Diane Hathaway participated in a public hearing Wednesday on court rules. But Supreme Court staff barred reporters from approaching her when the event ended. Hathaway rose from her chair and exited through a side door to her office.

The federal government wants to seize her Florida home. A lawsuit filed last week says Hathaway and her husband concealed the property from a bank while trying to get approval for a short sale on another home in Grosse Pointe Park.

The sale erased $600,000 in mortgage debt. The government says the Florida home was then transferred back to the couple by a relative.
