$550 Powerball jackpot has Georgia in frenzy

ATLANTA -

All across Georgia and in dozens of other states, people are lining up for Powerball tickets. Each one is hoping to get a piece of the huge $550 million jackpot in Wednesday night's drawing.

At a store on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta, employees say they are selling 200 tickets an hour.

The massive jackpot is bringing in players and their dollars to stores. While some pick their own numbers, others prefer to have the computer choose the numbers. Some say they have a formula for Powerball success.

"I pick on my children's ages, their birthdays," said one player.

If you are lucky enough to pick the winning numbers, what should you do? Attorney Howard Stopak has represented lottery winners before and had some advice for the lucky winner, or winners.

"Go see an investment counselor. And then after they do that, see another one. And after they do that, see another one and protect themselves, make sure that they don't squander. And then if you want to, give to charity or to your relatives or pay off your house. The first thing you do is you see an investment counselor, one that doesn't get a commission," said Stopak.

In Tallapoosa, one gas station off Interstate 20 is seeing long lines as residents from Alabama rushed to buy their chance at winning $550 million.  One resident from Wilsonville, Alabama said he drove 2.5 hours to get his ticket.  Another resident said the ticket he purchased will be his early retirement. He was confident that he would win, saying he was going to retire tonight.

Georgia Lottery officials say the $550 million Powerball jackpot is the largest in the game's history, and the second largest in the state after the record $656 Mega Millions jackpot in March.
