Ex-girlfriend of Dolton police chief files order of protection - KMSP-TV

Dolton police chief accused of harassing ex-girlfriend, family: EXCLUSIVE

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Yolanda Dyson says she can no longer live in her own home because of the actions of Dolton Police Chief Ronald Burge.

Dyson, a Village of Dolton employee, had been living with Burge in the Dolton house she owns for the past few years. She says when they recently broke up, the chief changed the locks and threw her belongings in the trash.

"We was no longer together. I left him. And he started stalking me. Following me," Yolanda says. "He's taken over my house. Just out of control. He was abusing his power, so I just started getting kind of afraid."

Last week, Dyson went before a Cook County judge and got an order of protection against Chief Burge, citing "intimidation" and "stalking," but she says the harassment only got worse. She says after she and her daughters broke into her house to salvage her belongings, Burge and a pair of Dolton officers went to her daughter's home, put her in handcuffs and threw her in a jail cell.

She says her other daughter's car was towed from its driveway in Matteson by Dolton's towing contractor.

"I didn't [feel like I could go to the police], because he said he's the chief. He's the head person in charge," Yolanda says. "He sent me a message there is nothing I can do."

Dolton Mayor Ronnie Lewis, who hired Chief Burge, told Fox 32 off-camera that he asked Burge to turn the investigation over to Illinois State Police.

Mayor Lewis denies his chief did anything wrong and says Dyson's accusations are motivated by politics.

"Politics? This has nothing to do with politics. This is my life," Yolanda said after hearing Lewis' comments. "This is personal. This is the chief of police and he's just taking over and abusing his power."

Dolton's mayor says Chief Burge has not been put on suspension, but is taking some vacation time while the state police and sheriff investigate his actions.

FOX 32 News also learned that the state police took Burge's service weapon and his firearms owner identification card.

The chief, who formerly ran police departments in Dixmoor and Harvey, has not yet responded to our calls.
