CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
One more thing, about a 30 year old photo that has suddenly gone viral.
This is a cautionary tale to remind you of the power of the internet and the dangers too. This story begins innocently enough, with an old publicity picture for a local CBS TV special in 1982. It was taken to promote a program about the consumer electronics show that year and all the cool new audio/video gizmos coming on the market. And yes, that unidentified geek is me.
After finding the photo in the basement last year, Mrs. Sirott posted it on her Facebook page. A few months later, a techie web site got it and posted it on their site. People started adding captions to it, including a grammatically incorrect one. Then, a couple of weeks ago, George Takei, better known as "Mr. Sulu" on Star Trek came across it and put it on his popular Facebook page. As of tonight, that 30 year old photo has now been viewed around the world a 100,000 times. And I've become the anonymous poster boy for out of date electronics.
Moral to the story is to be careful with what you post on social media. You never know where it's going to end up, and it lives forever. I'm just glad it wasn't anything more embarrassing.

Over the weekend, the Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller "Oblivion" was number one at the box office. But the movie I'm talking about wasn't even in the top ten.
