The Talker: Record Powerball jackpot boosted to $500M

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The record Powerball jackpot is now even bigger.

Powerball officials say they've boosted the jackpot for Wednesday's drawing to $500 million from the previously posted $425 million. Huge ticket sales nationally are pushing the payout higher.

A single winner choosing the cash payout will take home $327 million before taxes.

Record jackpots encourage players who usually sit on the sidelines to play and group purchases from work pools increase.

The jackpot is the largest ever for the Powerball game and the second largest lottery jackpot of all time, eclipsed only by the $656 million Mega Millions record set in March.

Workers at one 7-11 in Chicago say business has been very busy, with some people buying as much as $40 worth of tickets at a time.

The odds of winning are around 175,000,000 to 1, but that doesn't stop some people from dreaming.

So, what would you do if you won all that cash?

"Take care of my entire family as best that I can, and put my kids through college because that's very important," one man says.

"Quit my job. Go on vacation. Buy a house, buy a car, do all that stuff that I need," another person told our cameras.

Not to spoil the fun, but you're more likely to pick a perfect NCAA basketball bracket, give birth to quadruplets, or even become president of the United States.

Here's what our friends on Facebook our saying about their plan of action if they were to hold the winning ticket:

Richie says he'll "buy new tires for [his] car...the Mars rover!"

Tom wants to "donate some to find a cure for Alzheimer's."

Red says he'll "buy the Chicago Bears!"
