Strong winds bring cold, snow to metro

Posted: Updated:

Much of the metro area is currently under a wind advisory, with gusts of up to 45 mph possible -- but that blustery northwest wind is bringing a big drop in temperatures and some flakes with it.

It's expected that there will be sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph through Friday morning, and officials warn that could make it difficult to drive high profile vehicles -- especially if the road gets slick.

While the temperature was still hovering around 40 as the sun set on Thursday, wind chill values of as low as -5 are possible as the temperatures dip into the low 20s and high teens in the evening.

Residents who took advantage of the warmer weather this week to hang holiday directions may want to secure them if ice starts to form or they are getting yanked violently by the wind.

The following counties will remain under a wind advisory until 6 a.m.:

  • Anoka
  • Carver
  • Dakota
  • Goodhue
  • Hennepin
  • Kandiyohi
  • McLeod
  • Meeker
  • Nicollet
  • Ramsey
  • Rice
  • Scott
  • Sherburne
  • Sibley
  • Stearns
  • Todd
  • Wadena
  • Washington
  • Wright
