CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
You'd hardly believe it with today's chilly temperatures, but Thursday is in the record books as one of the warmest Thanksgiving Days across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
The weather setup which favored the warm air mass included successive days of region-wide warming and somewhat limited nighttime cooling, as well as strong southerly winds on Thursday, which aided in transferring the warm air northward, according to the National Weather Service.
Thursday's high of 63 degrees at O'Hare International Airport put the day in a three-way tie -- with 1896 and 1915 -- for the third-warmest Thanksgiving Day recorded in Chicago, according to the weather service.
The warmest Thanksgiving Day in Chicago, since record-keeping began in 1873, was 69 degrees on Nov. 24, 1966.
In Rockford, the high of 64 degrees on Thursday tied the mark for the second-warmest Thanksgiving Day there, according to the weather service. The warmest Thanksgiving Day on record in Rockford was 67 degrees, on Nov. 26, 1914.
Temperatures throughout the region on Friday will be 25 to as much as 30 degrees colder than they were on Thanksgiving Day, because of a strong cold front moving through the region, the weather service said.
