For more than four decades, Hosea Feed the Hungry has provided thousands of people with a holiday meal each Thanksgiving. This year is no exception, and about 16,000 people are expected to take in turkey and all the trimmings today at the Georgia World Congress Center.
Volunteers worked feverishly on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning to prepare this year's meal. They turned the basement of the DeKalb County Jail into the biggest kitchen in town, preparing about 1,000 turkeys, 500 pounds of stuffing and 500 pounds of beans. They also prepared sweet potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce—and of course, pie.
Organizers say Hosea Feed the Hungry has been helping the needy in metro Atlanta since 1971.
"This is the 42nd year that we have provided Thanksgiving meal for the hungry and homeless in Atlanta and I was there for the first one in 1970," said Elisabeth Omilami, the daughter of the program's founder Hosea Williams.
Omilami and her husband head up day-to-day operations at Hosea Feed the Hungry, but they say it couldn't happen without the hundreds of volunteers.
Some 11,000 meals will be served at the Georgia World Congress Center, while another 5,000 will be delivered to people who are shut-ins, the elderly and others who can't make it to that location.
For the first time, Georgia's Department of Labor will have a number of workshops with employers on hand to help people find jobs.
