Be a 'Santa for Seniors' with Meals on Wheels

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, but a local organization is helping us remember a group of folks who are often forgotten at Christmas.  Meals on Wheels helps seniors stay independent year-round, and this holiday season, they want you to help make them feel appreciated!

Meals on Wheels delivered their first meal in Atlanta back in 1970.  Every day, volunteers deliver more than 300 meals to area seniors.  But no one likes to be alone at Christmas, and that's where you come in.

With their Santa for Seniors program, seniors will get a wrapped gift delivered to their home along with their regular meal.

"In a lot of cases, and this is hard to believe, it's the only visitor they will have, and the only gift they will receive," said volunteer Dottie Smith.

So, Meals on Wheels Atlanta is accepting new, unwrapped gifts like magnifying glasses, toiletries, and large print books--- small tokens that might mean the world to a lonely senior.

From now until December 18, you can drop off your new, unwrapped gifts at the Meals on Wheels office.  For a list of gift suggestions, click here!

For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
