COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

An apartment fire in College Park left 16 people homeless late on Thursday night.

The blaze broke out at the Alexandria Landing Apartments on Godby Road at around 10 p.m. Firefighters managed to get the flames under control, but not before a number of units were destroyed.

No one was hurt, in part due to neighbors who went door to door evacuating the burning building. Neighbors say the fire broke out in an end unit that they believe was occupied by a maintenance worker.

"I was on my way to bed and I got a bang on the door from one of the neighbors that let us know everybody needs to get out of the building," said Melody Williams.

Williams said when she stepped out and looked to the right, she could see flames shooting out of the front door of the building.

The Red Cross has been called in to assist the victims.

The fire affected 12 units of the complex, and destroyed six of them. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
