CDC: Diabetes diagnoses double in 18 states -- including Minn.

New numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show an alarming increase of the number of diabetes diagnoses. In fact, even the lead researcher called the study results "shocking."

According to the CDC, the number of diabetes diagnoses has doubled in 18 states -- including Minnesota. In the remaining 32, diagnoses are up by 50 percent.

In 2010, more than 6 percent of Minnesotans were diagnosed with diabetes. That's compared to just 3 percent in 1995.

Experts attribute the increase to the nation's obesity epidemic -- and to medical advances that are helping diabetics live longer; however, as many as a third of people with diabetes are not even aware they have it because it can sneak up on an adult.

Mike Johnson was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 10 years ago.

"Dry mouth, weak bladder -- I was getting up and going to the bathroom two to three times a night," he recalled."

Now, he takes medication and this the gym two to three times a week.

"I want to live," he said.

In Minnesota, it's estimated that 290,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes, but nearly five times that many residents have high blood sugar levels that aren't high enough to trigger a diagnosis.
