Cobb Co. group holding Thanksgiving food drive

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

There's just a week left until Thanksgiving, but many metro Atlanta families don't have the means to do shop for the holiday feast. That's where the Center for Family Resources steps in. The Cobb County non-profit has cranked up its 27th annual "Thanks for Giving" food drive.

Food is coming in by the truckload at Marietta's Jim Miller Park. There are boxes of canned goods, food staples and other items needed to make a thanksgiving feast.

Donna Conklin brought donations from her neighborhood in east Cobb.

"Everybody just wants to give something. And some people just might give a few cans. And other people give, you know, several grocery bags. And some people just give gift cards. So, it's been wonderful. And we all feel like we're doing our little part," said Conklin.

Inside the warehouse, volunteers are busy checking their shopping lists and packing boxes for needy families.

Sumaria Carmichael is part of a group of single mothers who volunteered to pack the food boxes. She said that she knows what it's like to struggle during the holidays.

"I've actually used this service twice. And now I'm to the point to where I can help out and give back to the community," said Carmichael.

Nearly 500 volunteers are packing boxes for almost 1,200 needy Cobb County families. Organizers say the whole idea is to help them create their own Thanksgiving traditions.

"We really want people to feel at home. We want them to still feel some type of independence. And so, in order to do that we give them the food that they need and the supplies they need to be able to go home have their own Thanksgiving meal and build those traditions with their family members," said Arielle Haynes of the Center for Family Resources.

They're still accepting donations for the Thanks For Giving food drive. If you would like to help, visit: http://thecfr.org/thanks-for-giving/
