MADISON, Wis. (KMSP) -

A guitarist for the popular Minneapolis band Solid Gold is dead after being shot and killed by police in Madison, Wis.

Paul Heenan, 30, had spent the night at a bar before heading home early Friday and accidentally walking into the wrong house.

Madison Police Chief Noble Wray confirmed Heenan was a new neighbor -- not a burglar. He had entered the house using a key the homeowners kept in their door.

The homeowners called police and struggled with Heenan. The chief says Officer Stephen Heimsness pulled his department-issued firearm when he found Heenan grappling with the homeowner outside.

Wray says Heenan advanced toward the officer after cursing at him and grabbing his hand. Police claim Heimsness felt Heenan was reaching for the gun and responded by firing three rounds.

Madison police say they are investigating the incident to see if the officer's actions were appropriate.

Heenan played guitar and recorded with the band between 2003 and 2004 before moving to New York.
