Protesters call for Roy Roberts to step down as DPS's emergency financial manager

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Voters said 'no' to emergency managers and repealed Public Act 4 in last week's election. Now, some residents are trying to show Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Roy Roberts the door.
Protesters and school board members rallied Monday outside the Fisher building in Detroit, posting "wanted" and "eviction" posters outside of Roberts' office.
Roberts said last month he might step down if Proposal 1, the state's emergency manager referendum, was defeated. But in a written statement released last week, Roberts said he would stay in the position for at least the next month.
"We would like him to leave and return it to a democratically elected governance," said DPS school board President Lamar Lemmons.
Public Act 4 allowed Roberts to control both DPS's budget and academic decisions. Its repeal leaves Roberts in control of only the budget. Governor Rick Snyder's office says Roberts has reduced the district's deficit from $237 million to $84 million in one year.
The protesters plan on taking the issue to Lansing on Tuesday.
"We can help them pack up there stuff and let the people get back in the driver's seat as it relates to their cities and school districts," said Rev. David Bullock from the Rainbow Push Coalition.
A school board meeting is also planned Tuesday night at Detroit's main library at 6 p.m.
