Election officials in Minneapolis confirm that ballot issues in three precincts will force a manual, hand-count of about 6,000 ballots starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Election officials say they expect the hand-count of votes from three Minneapolis precincts affected by faulty ballot printing should wrap up on Wednesday night, with results becoming available on Thursday.
At 10 a.m., officials from Minneapolis and Hennepin County began to sift through about 5,500 ballots that could not be read by scanning machines. The printing errors did not affect the content of the ballots cast.
The following precincts were affected:
Precinct 10-1
Precinct 10-2
Precinct 10-8
Those precincts are located in the largely Democratic Lowry Hill East and Whittier neighborhoods.
By Wednesday afternoon, city and county staff said the counting will continue on Thursday morning if the count cannot be completed in one day. It's estimated that the results will still be reflected on the Secretary of State's website on that day.
The election results from the remaining 114 precincts were able to be reported as usual, although many did not come until well after midnight.
After each election passes, the city of Minneapolis reviews how the process went and whether improvements should be made. Officials are asking voters to either call 311 or send in an e-mail with feedback on how their voting experience and any suggestions they have to improve the process in the future.
