Election officials in Minneapolis confirm that ballot issues in three precincts will force a manual, hand-count of about 6,000 ballots starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
The affected precincts -- District 10-1, 10-2, and 10-8 -- are located in the largely Democratic neighborhoods of Lowry Hill East and Whittier. Ballots at affected precincts are being held securely.
The problem was not with the machines, but with the ballots themselves would not be scanned because of the way they were printed. Earlier on Tuesday, officials confirmed that between 10 and 12 ballot readers at Minneapolis precincts had trouble on Election Day.
Yet, that was not the only issue plaguing election officials in the city. By midnight, none of ballots cast in Minneapolis had been reported toward the state's election totals; however, election officials say they expect those results will be reflected in the precinct totals soon.
St. Paul elections officials reported no major problems, aside from long lines seen all over the Twin Cities metro. Some of the longest lines have been at the University of St. Thomas and Holy Spirit Church at Hamline and Randolph.
Elsewhere in the country, the Election Protection coalition reported problems with ballot readers in the Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo, Ohio areas. Trouble was also reported with machines in Galveston, Texas and some precincts in the Tampa, Fla. area.
