Atlanta police say someone opened fire at the children's home in southwest Atlanta early Saturday, killing 2-year-old Ty-Teyanna Motley and injuring her 1-year-old brother Isaiah.
The children and their grandmother were sleeping on a sofa bed at a home on Polar Rock Place around 1:40 a.m. when someone fired at least two shots through the front door, striking the children.
The 2-year-old girl was rushed to Grady Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her 1-year-old brother transported to Children's Healthcare at Egleston, where he was treated for a bullet wound to the back.
Sylvia Motley, the children's mother, urged the shooter to surrender to police.
"Please turn yourself in. Please," she said.
Funeral director Marie Goolsby is one of many people in the close-knit community grieving for Ty-Teyanna.
"I've been knowing the family since the mom was a baby herself A child and then to have to serve her with her child, that's real hard. I have grandchildren the same age," said Goolsby.
Goolsby is doing what she can for the family as police search for the gunman.
"It just innocent victims, so whoever has any knowledge or whoever did that, they need to turn themselves in because it's an unjustified killing of an innocent baby," Goolsby said.
Police have not released any new details in the case.
A memorial fund has been set up in Ty-Teyanna Motley's name. Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank branch.
