911 caller: ‘The car was going 90 and hit this guy’

The woman charged in a downtown Minneapolis hit-and-run crash that killed Augsburg College student Austin Conley told police she thought a rock smashed her windshield.

Teisha Randle, 20, of St. Paul is charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in what witnesses described as a high-speed crash in the Warehouse District early Sunday morning.

According to police dispatch records, the 911 caller kept saying, "The car was going 90 and hit this guy. I think he's dead."

Conley, a 20-year-old Augsburg student, was found unresponsive in the street, knocked out of his shoes and thrown more than 100 feet from the intersection of 3rd Street and 1st Avenue.

Two other drivers who witnessed the crash said a car was speeding down 3rd Avenue, cutting off other cars before hitting Conley. One driver said Conley was thrown up into the air upon impact, then struck a second time as the car sped off.

Randle told police she had been celebrating a birthday with friends at the Imperial Room and said she was driving about 40 mph on 3rd Avenue when she heard a loud crash. She thought someone threw a rock at her windshield, which "exploded" before she drove off without stopping.

Randle told police she left her car at the Dowling Avenue exit, but the car was later found hidden in the garage of her St. Paul home.

Teisha Randle's criminal history includes an arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in 2006, and she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense of driving under the influence. She has no other citations on her record.

Sgt. Stephen McCarty, with the Minneapolis Police Department, said Randle's license was revoked at the time of the crash.

Destiny Montgomery, Conley's sister, told FOX 9 News, "I don't know what her rush was, but if she would have did that, I think he would still be here."

Family and friends are planning celebration of Conley's life at Seven, where he was employee for two years, in downtown Minneapolis. It will be held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
