Fierce winds caused hundreds of power outages in the metro area because of fallen trees. Georgia Power worked into the wee hours this morning restoring electricity.
The wicked winds uprooted and toppled some dead trees across metro Atlanta.
Certified arborist Doni Jones, the owner of Don's Tree Service, said that decay, growing fungus and other problems made a tree in Andrew Poole's backyard susceptible to high winds on Sunday.
"Once the tree started to split from the weight, moisture got in there, rain and other elements got in there and started to rot the tree," Jones said.
The tree crashed through part of a fence and onto Poole's garage and truck.
"For us to come outside and open up the back door and all we see is tree was amazing," Poole said.
Jones finds in most cases, trees that give way during bad weather are diseased, or weak due to years of drought.
Jones says some signs that a tree might be in trouble include large cavities and decay in addition to growing fungus. She said that if you see those problems, it's a good idea to try to get rid of the tree before it falls.
