Miguel Cabrera hit a wild-blown, two-run homer off Matt Cain in the third inning, and the Detroit Tigers took their first lead of the World Series when they moved ahead of the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Sunday in Game 4 as they tried to avoid elimination.
But that lead was short-lived.
The Giants went on to win the World Series 4-3 in a 10 inning game at Comerica Park. It's the Giants' second championship in three seasons.
Postseason hero Marco Scutaro delivered the championship-winning hit, singling home Ryan Theriot with two outs in the top of the 10th inning.
The loss capped a stunning downfall for the Tigers, who came into the series having swept the New York Yankees and with time to set up their pitching rotation. But it was the Giants pitchers who dominated, holding the Tigers to only three runs in the series' first three games entering Sunday night. Detroit scored 19 runs in the four games against New York.
It 's also the third consecutive World Series win for the National League, and fourth in the last five seasons.
In the first three games of the series, the Giants jumped out in front and the Tigers never recovered — or ever held a lead. On Sunday night, the Giants once again got on the board first, as Hunter Pence hit a ground-rule double to left one out in the second and Brandon Belt followed him with a drive off the top of the wall down the right-field line to score Pence and give starter Matt Cain some an early lead.
But unlike in Games 1-3, the Tigers responded. With Austin Jackson on second and two out in the bottom of the third, AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera homered to right off of Cain, giving Detroit its first lead of the series at 2-1.
The Giants retook the lead at 3-2 when Buster Posey hit a two-run homer with one out in the sixth. But again, the Tigers responded, Delmon Young tying the game with a solo shot off Cain in the bottom of the inning
Santiago Casilla got the final out of the ninth for the win, and Sergio Romo struck out the side in the 10th for his third save, freezing Cabrera with a called third strike to end it. The Giants ran out of the dugout and bullpen to celebrate between the mound and second base.
Of the 24 teams to take 3-0 Series leads, 21 swept and three won in five games.
