Investigators say they believe road rage led to a shooting that injured a passenger in a car traveling on Interstate 35 shortly after bar close.
Officials say the shooting took place at about 2:20 a.m. between Cliff and Diffley roads.
Officials with the Eagan Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol and other agencies surrounded a Volkswagen Jetta carrying eight passengers after someone called 911 to report the injury.
The victim, identified only as a 26-year-old woman, was sitting on the lap of a passenger in the front seat with her back pressed against the window when a dark-colored SUV began following them closely. While still on the ramp from Cliff Road, the driver of the Volkswagen put his hand out the window and "gave the finger" to the SUV.
After the vehicles got onto the interstate, the black SUV moved to the right of the Volkswagen. Police say both vehicles were driving side-by-side when an occupant in the SUV shot at the Volkswagen, hitting the victim in her right shoulder. A second bullet struck the car near the passenger door.
The victim was taken to Regions hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators say they have been following leads after interviewing witnesses; however, many of them were intoxicated -- including the driver, 28-year-old Grant Hengy, of St. Paul, who was arrested on a DUI charge.
